Fire is one of the costliest exposures a facility can carry, and one of the most preventable. For industrial plants, warehouses and NGO compounds across Yemen and the wider region, a serious fire does not simply destroy assets. It halts operations, endangers staff, and can leave a site effectively uninsurable at any sensible premium.
Insurers price what they cannot verify
Underwriting is an exercise in reducing uncertainty. When a facility cannot demonstrate how its detection, suppression and escape provisions were designed, tested and maintained, the underwriter has no basis for optimism and must assume an unfavourable case. That assumption is priced into the premium every year, and it is almost always more expensive than fixing the underlying gaps.
The reverse is equally true. A site that can hand over an ordered, current evidence file is a materially different proposition to the person setting the rate.
What a certified assessment examines
Our NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialists assess facilities against international fire safety standards rather than local custom. A typical assessment covers:
- Detection and alarm — coverage, zoning, audibility and the condition of the system in practice rather than on paper.
- Suppression — sprinkler, hydrant and extinguisher provision matched to the actual hazard and occupancy.
- Water supply — availability, pressure and duration under genuine demand, which is where many sites quietly fail.
- Means of escape — travel distances, exit widths, signage, lighting and whether routes are usable when the building is full.
- Passive protection — compartmentation, fire doors and sealed service penetrations.
- Flammable storage — quantities, separation and control of ignition sources.
- Testing and maintenance records — the evidence trail that proves any of the above still works.
Documentation is the deliverable insurers pay for
Facilities are often surprised that the assessment report matters as much as the hardware. A carrier cannot inspect every site it covers, so it relies on credible third-party documentation. A certified specialist's report, with findings ranked by severity and a closure record against each one, converts an unknown risk into a quantified one. That is the change that moves a premium.
Where the savings come from
Clients across Yemen and the region have used certified fire protection programmes to reduce insurance premiums by as much as 85%. Those reductions are not a negotiating trick. They follow from genuinely lowering the probability and likely severity of a loss, and then being able to prove it. The risk reduction is real, and the premium follows the risk.
Fixing the findings that matter
A gap list is only useful if it is actionable. Ranking findings by severity lets a limited budget go to the items that genuinely reduce risk, rather than the ones that are cheapest to close. Most sites find that a small number of corrections account for the majority of both the hazard and the premium.
